How to Choose the Right Centerless Grinder
Centerless grinders are used in CNC machines and drilling presses for heavy-duty turning operations. A grinding wheel consists of a fixed disk attached to a steel spindle and is used to grind surfaces as well as perform other rotating actions. The term “centerless” comes from the fact that the surface of the grinding wheel remains true regardless of the position of the center of the wheel relative to the fixed work surface. In the case of centerless grinders, the workpiece face is ground to a specific angle to produce a unique shape.

Centerless Grinder machines come in several types and designs. The most common type is called a direct-cut rotary wheel assembly. The rotary assembly is typically made up of four metal disks with a stationary center on the inside. The speed at which the disks rotate can be controlled using a potentiometer or variable resistor. This control enables the operator to vary the size of abrasive material used in the grinding operation.
Another design that is frequently used in centerless grinder machines is a non-centered design. Often referred to as a proportional grind, this type of grinding wheel utilizes a gear in the center to govern the turning of the grinding wheels. A non-centered grinder can have its work rest positioned anywhere within the machine and still achieve excellent results. The gear in the center acts as a variable in the control of the workers. The gear provides a constant force and output to the workers and is capable of being set at any level to attain the greatest bearing pressure.
One of the most important things to keep in mind when choosing a centerless grinder machine setup is that the quality of the wheels used in the machine must be of the highest possible quality. High quality wheels are capable of providing very accurate turning with a consistent, reliable result each and every time. The wheels should also be designed to withstand a great deal of wear and should always feature an anti-static field. The grinding wheels should also be made of materials that will not wear easily, such as carbon.
In addition to selecting a grinding wheel that has a good level of performance and meets all safety standards, you should also make sure that the size of the workpiece fits the grinder properly. Many centers allow for the use of interchangeable workmates. If a centerless grinder only utilizes one workable, it is important to make sure that the diameter of the workbases matches the diameter of the grinding wheel. When a two-workblade system is utilized, it is important to make sure the two workplaces are on the same level of the worktop. The use of a two-workblade system is ideal for maximizing efficiency and minimizing wear and tear on the grinding wheels.
